Description

Powers John’s Lane 12 Year Old is a bold, richly layered rendition of Irish single pot still whiskey. With its earthy‑tobacco nose, luscious fruit and honey palate, fine texture, and generous finish, it embodies tradition and complexity. A rewarding dram that bridges Irish warmth with pot still sophistication.

️ Heritage & Craft

  • Named after the original John’s Lane Distillery in Dublin (est. 1791), this whiskey carries on the legacy of traditional single pot still methods—made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley in pot stills and triple‑distilled—all crafted at Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork

  • Aged 12 years in a blend of ex‑bourbon American oak and a touch of Oloroso sherry cask for added richness and balance

Nosing Notes

  • Rich, dark aromas of earthy leather, charred wood, dark chocolate, treacle toffee, and dried apricot, with subtle tobacco and leathery undertones

  • Some reviewers note honey, fruit, cinnamon, and even solder-smoke accents, adding complexity

Palate & Texture

  • Full-bodied and rich—initial spice gives way to notes of vanilla, honeyed dried fruit (apricot, raisin), and creamy butterscotch, layered with warm baking spices

  • Silky, oily mouthfeel with polished tannins; a late-wave of cinnamon and pepper provides warming depth

Finish

  • Long and persistent: toasted oak, honey, dried fruit and gentle spice round out the finish with a smooth, satisfying echo

Character & Recognition

  • Bottled at robust 46% ABV (92 proof), non‑chill‑filtered, preserving texture and full flavor

  • Awarded Irish Whiskey of the Year 2012 by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, recognized for its depth

  • Fans appreciate this as a bolder, more classical style of Irish single pot still, especially compared to modern Redbreast expressions

️ Serving Suggestions

  • Ideally sipped neat or with a splash of water to open the aromatics.

  • Inspires classic cocktails: a Sherry‑wist Old Fashioned or a robust Irish Sour highlight its spiced‑honey layers.
